Impact Of Your Support

DESC sees first-hand the positive impact its management services have on the nonprofit and educational communities. We know and research supports that well managed nonprofits are more effective in achieving their missions.

DESC's citizen impact continues to grow as its volunteer consultants work on nearly 300 projects annually impacting over 1,000,000 citizens and children throughout our community.

Examples of Community Impact - Your Dollars at Work:

  • Human Services: During the past four years DESC has worked with Forgotten Harvest, a true success story within the metropolitan Detroit community. In December 2007, Forgotten Harvest was named the Best Managed Nonprofit - a prestigious honor awarded by Crain's Detroit Business. The assistance DESC provided helped this organization to build an infrastructure that ensured its continued growth and sustainability. With their improved business model, in 2007 Forgotten Harvest rescued 8.6 million pounds of food for redistribution from a network of 375 food donors. Six years ago Forgotten Harvest was rescuing 1.1 million pounds of food.

  • Arts and Culture: Throughout the past six years DESC has worked with Matrix Theatre helping them move their organization to a more sustainable operation. Initially Matrix Theatre was a volunteer operated organization and through the assistance it received from DESC, this professional theatre company is now operated by a paid staff of five. In addition through the guidance provided by DESC, Matrix Theatre is expanding its services and is considering purchasing their own building.

  • Youth: Beginning some seven years ago, DESC began working with Think Detroit, helping them address their management issues. DESC has worked closely with this organization as it has grown to the point of merging with the City of Detroit's Police Athletic League (PAL). The merger of these two organizations has created one of the most impactful youth development programs within southeast Michigan.

  • Educational: As part of a special initiative, the Skillman Foundation has selected 50 finalist schools from within the City of Detroit to be considered for a new funding program specifically designed for schools and school principals within Detroit. Of the 50 schools selected 70% of the principals from these schools graduated from DESC's Leadership Development Program. Through their participation in DESC's Leadership Development program these principals improved their leadership and business skills, which positioned them to qualify for this special funding initiative.
