"While the process was daunting at times, it was comforting to know that professionals associated with the Corps were always available to listen, suggest, question and support us."

In early 2007, the Michigan State Fair Authority (MSFA) was poised for change. The Authority wanted to draw attention to the Michigan State Fairgrounds and Exposition Center as a family-centered place for year-round activities going well beyond the traditional late-summer State Fair.
With that in mind, the organization contracted with the Detroit Executive Service Corps to develop a strategic plan to direct its new and larger role as an entertainment venue.
DESC assembled a team of knowledgeable volunteers to lead the project. MSFA board members, community activists and others met with these Corps consultants throughout the year.
Starting with a review of the MSFA mission and core values, the DESC team helped officials focus on the physical components essential to their vision of an expanded entertainment venue: buildings, utilities, parking and the like.
MSFA Chair Mark Gaffney summed up the experience this way: "As we enter the implementation stages of our strategic plan, I am confident that DESC's efforts will benefit our staff, Authority Board, fair-goers, and most importantly the citizens of the State of Michigan."

"We now have a mission, a plan and a support group (DESC) that will serve us in all aspects of being a year-round family-oriented event center."
