Arts and Scraps - Recycling for Learning & Fun

Arts & Scraps has an agenda that's arguably among the local nonprofit community's most unique: The organization recycles 28 tons of industrial scraps into learning and creative material for 275,000 children annually. Their philosophy is summed up in three powerful words: "think, create, learn."

"DESC has helped Arts & Scraps to move forward, to expand services to reach more children, and to recycle more industrial scraps into art," stated Peg Upmeyer, director for Arts & Scraps. She went on to say, "Their volunteers have so much knowledge to share - DESC just makes sense."

Programs offered by Arts & Scraps, a 19-year-old agency, include a retail center, workshops at their Detroit site and at organizations and schools throughout the metro area, service learning for young people of all ages and abilities, activity tables at events and custom-designed kits.

Children are presented with age-appropriate curriculum ideas and asked to invent solutions to challenges, learning to explore and value their own ideas in the process. Program income generates 65 percent of Arts & Scraps operating income, with discounts for underserved groups.
